BACKSTAGE AT THE OSCARS 2013!
By Ronan Wright on February 15th, 2013
As usual in the run-up to the Oscars, we’re being drip-fed information on who’s going to take part in Hollywood’s biggest party over the last few weeks. This year is no exception.
The most recent name to be added to the performers’ list was Dame Shirley Bassey, who will perform at the Oscars for the first time this year. 2013 is a Diamond Jubilee for Bassey, who has been performing now for more than six decades!
Other performers on the big night include Barbara Streisand, Norah Jones and Adele. Adele will be singing her song Skyfall, written for the latest Bond. Skyfall isn’t up for Best Picture, even though this year is the 50th anniversary of Bond movies. However, there will be a montage sequence being played on the night to recognise the icon’s inimitable presence in cinema for the last fifty years.
Other stars already confirmed for the big night include the cast of Chicago – Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah and Renée Zellweger – and the cast of The Avengers – Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Samuel L Jackson.
Other presenters include Charlize Theron, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Daniel Radcliffe, Meryl Streep, Jean Dujardin, Christopher Plummer and Mark Wahlberg.
The job of hosting this year’s Oscars goes to Seth MacFarlane and the show will go out live to 225 countries around the world. As for which film might win Best Picture, if you check out which film has been gathering the most gongs at other award ceremonies recently then you wouldn’t be alone putting Argo at the front of the list, as it’s already scooped a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild cast award and a British BAFTA for Best Film. Still that’s not to say that there won’t be a few surprises on Oscar’s big night!
Wherever you are, it’s still possible to catch some of the nominee films at the movies. If you look at cinema listings Edinburgh, for instance, you’ll see that Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, The Impossible, Django Unchained, Les Misérables and Flight all are still showing. Catch them before they leave the big screen!

Y’know, when Seth MacFarlane was announced as host, my enthusiasm dropped off dramatically. Especially after how good Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were at the Golden Globes. But then the vaunted Academy made these known and my interest picked up. Particularly with the Bond 50th related items: Bassey, all six Bond actors on stage, and Adele.
Of course, it’s not all great news. I’m secretly hoping the Avengers cast mops the floor (à la Hulk) with ‘Chicago’s cast
. I’d paid good money for that . Oh, and I’m pulling big time for ARGO to win Best Picture — would serve them right for leaving Ben Affleck on their Director’s list. But I’m not bitter
. Thanks, Ronan.

Oh, and I meant ‘leaving Ben Affleck OFF their Director’s list.’ Typo

Hi Michael, I didn’t get to the see the Oscars as it’s on at an awkward time for me given the time difference. Hope you enjoyed it. Argo was a nice surprise as Best Picture and I’m glad Ang Lee was recognised for Life of Pi.
