TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE – FEBRUARY EDITION

By on February 2nd, 2013

With highlights including Jessica Chastain fronted frightener Mama, the Wachowski Brother’s return to the big time with philosophical, star-studded sci-fi Cloud Atlas and Denzel Washington’s last ditch Oscar push with Flight, February at the box office is looking good.

Bullet to the head (15) – February 1st
If like me you need another garden variety testosterone-fueled brain melter like, well, a bullet to the head, then I’d steer clear of this one. A cop and a hitman get together to bring down their common foe after watching their respective partners die… yada, yada, yada. Try getting through the trailer without sniggering derisively. It can’t be done.

Beautiful Creatures (TBC) – February 13th
At first glance Beautiful Creatures looks like a nauseating jaunt, caught halfway between Twilight and The Craft. But it seems to convey the difficult choices, good or bad, faced by youngsters in a way that’s accessible to Twi-hards.

Flight (15) – February 1st
Aside from Denzel Washington being up for the best actor Oscar as well as Oscar winning Forest Gump director Robert Zemeckis behind the camera, Flight looks to be a pretty compelling character study with a glimpse at the bureaucracy around everyday acts of heroism.

Hitchcock (12A) – February 8th
If you could have one actor portray Alfred Hitchcock in a Biopic of the infamous director Notorious for having it in for Blondes, you could do worse than Sir Antony Hopkins. Find out if Hopkins is The Wrong Man for the job and whether and not Hitch was really the Psycho he’s made out to be.

Wreck it Ralph (PG) – February 8th
Another potential gem in Disney’s CGI crown with plenty of video-game inspired nostalgic humour as video game baddie Ralph discovers in group therapy that being the ‘bad-guy’ doesn’t make you a bad guy. Beat em’ up fans look out for Zangeif and Bison from Street Fighter II.

Cloud Atlas (15) – February 15th
Starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry Cloud Atlas takes an adventurous look at life, death and the world beyond this one. If you’re not a fan of out there sci-fi joints, chances are you’re going to hate Cloud Atlas, the new soul searching mind bender from the creators of The Matrix trilogy.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (TBA) - February 22nd
Ever wondered what a Snow White and the Huntsman style modern take on the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel might look like? Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner teams up with one time Bond girl Gemma Arterton for some medieval witch hunting with a supernatural edge. Hansel and Gretel go postal in a gothic fairytale that’s not for kids.

Mama (15) – February 22nd
From the director of Run Lola Run and the twisted creator of Pan’s Labyrinth comes a thoughtfully crafted supernatural shocker starring Zero Dark Thirty Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain. Mama is a must see for anyone who appreciates the subtle power of cinema to really get under the skin and unsettle.

To the Wonder (12A) – February 22nd
Starring Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem (as a priest), To the Wonder is the new film from Tree of Life and The Thin Red Line director Terrence Malick which explores the beauty of the human spirit and the transformative power of love. Arty farty but unmissable.

I’m pretty excited about Cloud Atlas, though I’m not sure why. It looks like a Smörgåsbord of different periods, styles and genres which is always fun. Plus it’s from the guys behind The Matrix. Zero Dark Thirty is worth watching. Wreck it Ralph is pretty good but falls short of the likes of your standard Pixar film. I’m keen to see Amour, Emanuelle Riva won a Bafta for her role as the wife in that. I think we’re seeing Flight 2moro actually.
